About
Leveraging the transformative power of generative artificial intelligence (AI), the Center for Early Literacy and Responsible AI (CELaRAI) will innovate beginning reading instruction for students in grades K-2 (ages 5-8).
CELaRAI has two overarching goals:
Goal One
Research and develop a responsible AI-powered early literacy learning tool, AI Reading Enhancer (AIRE), to improve reading skills, including phonics, fluency, and comprehension for beginning readers, especially those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Goal Two
Establish national leadership on responsible AI use in early literacy in schools.
To achieve these goals, CELaRAI will:
- Conduct an exploratory study to better understand plausible and optimal contexts for generative AI use in early literacy, and teachers’ AI uses and perspectives; and use this information to inform AIRE development.
- Develop AIRE, which generates personalized text, conducts real-time reading analysis, and provides just-in-time literacy support via enhanced text features, for K-2 students’ early literacy learning.
- Conduct pilot testing to evaluate AIRE’s effectiveness in improving early literacy outcomes and its usability and feasibility to inform further improvements of AIRE.
- Embed responsible AI throughout the research and development (R&D) by developing guidelines for ethical AIRE development and deployment.
- Implement dissemination, outreach and capacity building efforts to promote responsible AI in early literacy research and practice and supporting a wide adoption of AIRE.
